Welcome to the world of Maude Garrett

RSCPA NSW

Growing up, my family has always rescued dogs. We’ve rescued 6 year old brother and sister poodles called Candy and Thaixon (his name was Tyson but the dog was so scared of life that the name just didn’t seem to fit, so we altered the spelling of it) and 3 year old tibetan spaniel Bella.

Thaixon – RIP – died at 14 (last year)

Bella – still alive and kicking – now in Brisbane aged 12

Recently I supported my friend Nikki Phillips‘s idea to raise awareness for the RSPCA in Yagoona, NSW. They shelter so many different animals, who are there for all different reasons. Thousands of animals that have been abandoned, surrendered and abused are walked, washed, fed and looked after here. It’s because of this fantastic cause that we’re urging people to look deep into their pockets and support such a worthy cause. Become a Guardian Angel for RSPCA and see how your money is helping the thousands of animals that really need it over these next few months.

During the day, we (Nikki, Erin McNaught, April Rose Pengilly, Renee Bargh, Airlie Walsh, Laura Csortan, Erika Heynatz, Lizzy Lovette, Bondi Rescue lifeguards Dean and Andrew and Jonothan Moran) faced the reality that these animals were in. But to make their day special, we provided them with treats, toys, love, walks, pats and even a few photos!

I got my photo taken with little Jimmy, a 6 week old Shi Tzu puppy. Needless to say, I’ve put my hand up to adopt a pooch as soon as possible. There are so many there, that no matter what kind of pet you’re after, you’re sure to find one at the RSPCA. I urge people to NOT purchase puppies from pet stores, as they’re bred illegally in puppy farms under horrendous conditions. Save a life, give these animals the voice that they don’t have.

Maude, you are a darling. I’ve been involved with Monika’s doggie rescue for 10 years, so I see the results of rejected and abandoned dogs. Trouble is, all these shelters together don’t scratch the surface; 250,000 dogs and cats are euthanased each year in Australia. Not because of illness or old age, simply because they are unwanted and unable to be homed.

The sale of animals in completely unregulated. Anyone can walk into a shop and buy a dog, cat, rabbit, ferret, guinea pig, bird or fish no questions asked. I know of one retired couple who kept a maltese bitch on a lead for 10 years while the male dog kept her constantly pregnant. A local pet store would buy the puppies for $200 each.

So thanks for your efforts Maude. The world needs more people like you.

  4. I used to volunteer at the local animal shelter (sippy downs animal rescue: http://www.sippycreek.com.au/). My job was to get the newer dogs used to male company (as alot of animals we got where abused and mainly by males, and the fact that atleast 80% of the volunteers where females). I would take them for walks or just sit with them depending on how tense they where. I was never bitten in the 6 months I was there. Had some good memories from that place, like riding across noosa with 6 dogs in the car from other shelters that where too full. Or tonka, an irish wolfhound/great dane cross who was up to my elbows (I am 6.2). His paws where like bigger then my hands. INSANE! aswome dog though, if I had a property would have adopted him in a second.
